Ever since I was a little girl, I have absolutely loved the Disney Classics. I've watched them over and over, but there are certain movies that I favor over the rest: "Peter Pan" and "The Little Mermaid". Oh sure, I love "Aladdin", "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", "Beauty and the Beast", and "The Lion King", but not as much as this story. So, why? What is it about Ariel and her story that made her my favorite?
- Her Voice - Yes, all of the Disney princesses sing beautifully--it's a fact--but her voice was always the one that I liked best. My earliest memories of singing are of imitating her, which made a lot of sense when my mom told me that I had started doing that at about three years old. I even used to argue with one of my best friends about who could imitate her better (it was me ^_~).
- Her Species - She's a mermaid. How cool is that? All of the other Disney princesses are just ordinary humans--and that's what she chooses to be in the end, of course--but Ariel is born different, special. Given that I also used to love stories about mermaids, I guess the other girls never had a chance.
- Her Curiosity - As someone who is also very lucky not to have been born a cat, I appreciate this quality in other people. I really don't understand people who aren't curious by nature.
- Her Bravery - Like any good *DP, Ariel's nothing if not courageous. She tends to get a little reckless because of it--and almost gets eaten by a shark, drowned by a sudden loss of gills deep underwater, and killed by a sea witch--but I have to admire her guts.
- Her Determination - Now, I don't recommend falling in love with a prince who's not really your species, whose been forbidden for you to see by your father, and lives in a world that you can't survive in...but if you're going to do it, you better not half-ass it or give up at the first sign of trouble. She had no legs, so she made a deal. She lost her voice, but she went after her guy anyway. She couldn't swim, but she risked drowning in the ocean to save the man she loved in spite of it. The girl is the very definition of perseverance.
- Her Innocence - It's part of what makes her so cheerful and energetic, I think. Maybe that's why she seems younger than a lot of the other DPs. She's optimistic and naive because she just doesn't know a whole lot about the way the world works. I find it endearing.
Sure, I really like Belle (more than I realized, after reading a guest blog on Datingish
Disney Chicks, which inspired this blog) and Mulan and some of the others, but I think Ariel will always be my favorite. Who's your favorite Disney Princess and why?
*Disney Princess

As I guy, I have listed them in the order I would date them were I a charming Prince type.
Belle: Intelligent, non-conformist, can love a big, hairy Beast-man.
Mulan: Courageous, and has a personal sense of honor
Jasmine: Jasmine is just a hottie. She has a tiger.
Esmerelda: Same as Jasmine sans tiger.
! i was going to write a disney post! and trends can be annoying. sigh.
Belle and Mulan are tied for my favorite, although Sleeping Beauty comes in close afterward.
I always figured it was easier to be curious about something if you never really knew about it and kind of disregarded that.
-Anna.
Belle is my favourite - partly because she actually gets to know her prince first because she declares her love for him.
But mainly because of her yellow dress - she looks stunning in it :P
I loved her for her hair and her guts (or determination. that sounds better right?)
belle is a close second - her love for reading <3
(:
Gotta love the way Ariel's hair flowed in the water! We all want hair that fluid and beautiful...
@Edgebreak - I have to admit. Jasmine totally gets extra points for having a tiger. That's pretty awesome.
@THENit_exploded - I think you should still write your post. I'm actually planning on doing another Disney one after this because I feel so inclined.
@StorybookAuthor - Belle is really awesome and Mulan is pretty cool, too (though not technically a DP).
@eucalyptusXxXanonymous - I think Belle is the only Disney Princess who actually gets to know her prince before she falls in love with him. Well, you know, in the "official" DP set. If you count Mulan, she took her time too. I like slow development better than love at first sight too.
@tingtiing - I love her hair too. :) But when it comes down to physical appearance, it's pretty much just Snow White who I'd say isn't as pretty as the others and that's really because she has that weird haircut. XD
@fullmetalbunny - Very true. The color is really pretty too.
Mulan is my favorite by far.
true, ariel's hair is amazing.
mine would be the sleeping beauty but Im completely in love with Alice from Alice in Wonderland... although she's not a disney princess right?... mmm =S
mine is belle... and mulan isn't a disney princess really... but mulan rocks! =D
What I find cool about Ariel's voice is not just that she sings in "The Little Mermaid," but that her voice actually plays a central role in the plot of the movie.
My favorite DP would have to be Belle. She's a nerd! She's a smart, bookish, social outcast who isn't duped by the "handsome" Gaston (I used quotations because I don't find Gaston to be handsome at all). Her physical beauty is only a small piece of what makes her attractive. Plus she stands up to Beast when he gets all douche-baggy, then falls in love with him when she realizes he's got some really good qualities underneath the furry, toothy, roaring exterior.
